How to make more money in 2025 as a massage therapist

If you're anything like I am, I am not a planner, I'm a creative, probably the way you are as well.
And so planning isn't really hasn't been huge on my idea of how to grow my business, but it's really important. So we're going to talk about the current landscape of massage therapy and why planning matters.
The harsh realities are some of the challenges that we face as massage therapists. Number one can be inconsistent booking bookings. It can be the feast and famine and that cycle is brutal.
Some days you're fully booked and the other week it's like crickets. This unpredictability creates massive financial anxiety. Financial instability and regular income makes budgeting nearly impossible. Paying bills becomes a monthly stress fest. Many massage therapists work multiple jobs to stay afloat and all you want to do is make people feel better by doing massage.
This creates the burnout epidemic because working six to seven days a week is not sustainable. I have been there. I did a groupon years ago. I worked like, I don't know, I think like 21 or 22 days in a row without a day off and that is not physically or emotionally possible for the long term.
This exhaustion is very common with massage therapists and this causes many talented therapists to quit due to overwhelming stress or they just can't make their budget.
So let's talk about my personal transformation story and why I am convinced that massage memberships are ideal for almost all businesses. Really? So let's flash Back to like 2018.

💡So my light bulb moment came when I realized clients value relationship based care. That's the reason they keep coming back.
They might originally find you because you had a really nice website or somebody referred you, but they stay because they value the results you provide and your relationship with them.
A membership model therefore could solve multiple problems simultaneously. In my first year of implementing a membership model, I generated over $20,000 in additional predictable income.
And more importantly, I reclaimed my time and reduced my stress dramatically. So what I had to do is find out why my clients were not coming back more often, what prevented them from coming back more often, how to get them to come back, and to help them understand the benefits of being in a membership, they had to know why a membership would benefit them.
Of course it's going to benefit me and you because we're going to have more consistent income, number one. And number two, the clients aren't going to necessarily be quite as broken as they are when they wait nine months to get a massage. So let's break down the membership model a little bit. It allows you to have set scheduling if you choose to have set scheduling or recurring appointments. This allows you for better personal time management.
And a huge benefit is reduced marketing efforts. And this is going to lead to more time for quality client care or spending time with your family or doing the hobbies that you love.
So you'll have more energy to focus on what you love, which is helping your clients.
You probably didn't learn how to do awes business stuff when you're in massage school. I didn't. I was literally taught to put brochures on cars for marketing.
And that's not really a great way to bring clients in. So what you need to do is work with the clients that you already have. The interesting thing that when I started my membership in 2019, January of 2019. I had 16 people join. Out of those 16 people, not one of them. I'm steaming up my glasses, I'm a little bit warm here. Not one of those were regular clients.
They had all been my clients previously, but they were not regular clients. And so I was bringing that back into the fold. But I didn't really market other than my initial marketing, which was a series of emails that I sent to them. So let's talk about the importance of planning for 2025.
Like as I mentioned before, I'm not a planner, but it is important to plan. So as we Prepare to enter 2025, it's essential to have a clear plan in place for growing your massage business.
Because if you're not growing, you may be dying. And I mean, what happens if you have a regular client that you see every single week for two hours and that person moves or dies and all of a sudden you have a huge hole in your schedule?
So while you don't necessarily want to have new clients coming in all the time, I don't mind having new clients. But if you don't want to, that's fine.
You need to make sure that you have a plan that you can bring in regular income if you lose some of your key clients who provide a lot of your income.
Many creative therapists might feel overwhelmed by the business side of things, as I mentioned, but planning really is crucial for success. So why does planning matter? Well, it allows for clarity and direction. A well thought out plan provides clarity on your goals and direction for your business.
It helps you identify what you want to achieve in 2025,
whether that's increasing your client base, improving client retention, or enhancing your services, or maybe changing them a little bit. Accountability.
Having a plan holds you accountable. It encourages you to take actionable steps forward towards your goals rather than getting caught up in the day to day operations without a clear vision.
Planning also helps you allocate resources effectively, whether that's time, money or energy, ensuring you're making the most out of every opportunity.
So let's talk about, okay, maybe you're convinced that you want to do a membership, but the whole like you don't even know what to think about as far as policies, what you should include, how much you should charge.
